There are two types of road trips in the U.S.: car road trips and RV road trips.
Contrary to popular belief, travelling by RV will not necessarily save you money due to higher rental prices, especially in high season. Most of the time, the budget is similar for either option. It's up to you to decide which travel experience better suits your needs and interests.
Here are some of the pros and cons of each option:
Car road trips
Pros
- Lower rental prices
- Lower gas consumption than an RV
- Greater availability, even at the last minute
- Easier to drive / park
Cons
- You have to eat all your meals in restaurants (except picnics)
- Hotels / B&B accommodation are more expensive than camping
- You have to unpack and pack at every destination
RV road trips
Pros
- You can cook your own meals
- Closer to nature
- Campgrounds are cheaper
- Perfect for families
Cons
- Harder to drive in the city (and limited parking)
- Much more expensive in gas
- Higher rental prices (most of the time)
- You need to book a long time in advance to be sure of availability (6 months to 1 year)
