Let's embark together on a 9-day tour amidst the red sandstone, cacti, and vast desert landscapes!
Summary of the Arizona road trip
Days 1-2 : Phoenix
Welcome to the warm sun of Phoenix! Start your exploration with a visit to the Desert Botanical Garden, an iconic site showcasing an incredible variety of desert plants, including cacti, agaves, and wildflowers. Take time to explore the well-maintained trails and admire the sculptures installed throughout the garden.
Then, head to the Heard Museum. This renowned museum highlights the art and culture of Native American tribes of Arizona and beyond. Take time to admire exhibitions of jewelry, textiles, and sculptures. If you're feeling hungry, try The Coronado PHX, near the museum. This café offers Southern-worthy dishes, like their cauliflower tacos or their quinoa bowl.
Proceed to Heritage Square, a historic district just a 10-minute drive away. You can explore restored houses dating back to the late 19th century, like the Rosson House Museum. This site offers a fascinating insight into life in Phoenix during the Victorian era.
End your first day with a stunning view of the city by climbing to the summit of South Mountain Park’s Dobbins Lookout. Plan to arrive just before sunset to enjoy the spectacular colors. Your last stop for the day should be at Cibo Urban Pizzeria. Housed in a historic building, this restaurant offers artisanal pizzas and fresh salads in a cozy setting.
For your second day here, I recommend a morning hike at Camelback Mountain, one of Phoenix's most iconic outdoor sites. Choose the Echo Canyon or Cholla Trail, depending on your level. Starting early will help you avoid the heat! Recharge at Ocotillo. This modern restaurant offers Southwestern cuisine with a contemporary twist. Try their watermelon salad or tacos.
Afterward, head to the Phoenix Art Museum, which offers a vast collection of works ranging from classical to contemporary art. For the remainder of the afternoon, visit Tempe Town Lake. Rent a kayak or take a relaxing walk along the banks. If you prefer to stay in the city, a visit to the Japanese Friendship Garden can be an excellent alternative.
To end your stay, discover The Farm at South Mountain. This enchanting place offers a farm-to-table meal under the stars, with dishes made from local ingredients.
Days 3-4 : Sedona
Today is the day you officially hit the road for your Arizona road trip! Your first destination, Sedona, is a paradise for hikers. Head first to Cathedral Rock, one of Sedona's most famous trails. The climb, although sometimes challenging, offers spectacular views of the surroundings.
In the afternoon, visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross, a unique chapel nestled in the red rocks before heading to Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte for a more relaxing walk.
End your day with a meal at the highly sought-after Elote Café, where modern Mexican cuisine will delight your taste buds. Make sure to reserve, as this place is very popular.
I suggest starting your second day gently with breakfast at the Indian Gardens Café & Market, a picturesque spot nestled in Oak Creek Canyon. Then, set out on a hike in Boynton Canyon, known for its spiritual energy and spectacular scenery. If you're feeling adventurous, also explore Devil's Bridge, an impressive natural formation. To refuel, choose Tamaliza Café, a perfect stop with its homemade tamales and traditional Mexican dishes.
In the afternoon, explore Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, a charming complex of shops and galleries where you can browse or purchase unique souvenirs. If time permits, end your exploration of Sedona with a visit to Slide Rock State Park, where Oak Creek's natural slides offer a refreshing experience.
Finally, to conclude your stay, dine at the Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill. This restaurant combines exquisite Latin flavors with a breathtaking sunset view, offering a memorable end to your journey.
Day 5 : Grand Canyon
From Sedona, start your day early to make the most of the Grand Canyon, one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. Take the northern route via the picturesque Highway 89A, which passes through Oak Creek Canyon and Flagstaff.
Begin your exploration at the Visitor Center to gather information about trails and viewpoints. Next, head to Mather Point, one of the first accessible panoramas, offering an incredible view of the canyon's vast expanses. From there, follow the Rim Trail to Yavapai Point and Geology Museum, an easy and accessible walk where you can enjoy the landscapes while learning about the canyon's unique geology. If you're in the mood for a more active hike, descend a section of the Bright Angel Trail, but make sure to watch your time to climb back up without rushing.
For lunch, enjoy a casual meal at the Bright Angel Lodge, where you can savor classic dishes with a pleasant view. After re-energizing, drive or take the free shuttle to explore Desert View Drive. Stop at spectacular viewpoints like Grandview Point, Moran Point, and Lipan Point, before ending at Desert View Watchtower. This iconic tower offers a panoramic view and a unique perspective of the Colorado River.
In the late afternoon, watch the sunset from Hopi Point, a favorite spot for the magnificent colors illuminating the canyon as the day fades.
After admiring the sunset from Hopi Point, head to the Grand Canyon Star Party if visiting in June, or simply find an isolated spot along the Rim Trail to stargaze. Bring a blanket, get comfortable, and let yourself be amazed by the Milky Way and constellations visible to the naked eye.
For those wanting a late dinner, the El Tovar Dining Room on the South Rim is an excellent option.
Day 6 : Monument Valley
Take the Desert View Drive when leaving the Grand Canyon to admire the last morning panoramas, especially from Desert View Watchtower, before heading east towards Monument Valley. The approximately 3.5-hour drive offers spectacular landscapes, including the Tuba City region and Navajo lands.
Stop along the way for breakfast at Hogan Family Restaurant in Tuba City, a popular spot for its simple dishes and Navajo influences, giving you a taste of your upcoming day!
Upon arrival at Monument Valley, start by visiting the Visitor Center to learn more about the Navajo history and culture of the area. From there, embark on a Valley Drive, a 27-kilometer route that takes you through the stunning landscapes of the valley. If you want to further enrich the experience, book a guided tour with a Navajo guide, who will grant you access to public-restricted areas and share the legends and history of these sacred places.
For lunch, enjoy the View Restaurant, located in the heart of Monument Valley. This restaurant offers local cuisine with dishes inspired by Navajo culture, all with an amazing panoramic view of the buttes.
After lunch, take the time to explore famous spots like John Ford’s Point, a location often seen in classic westerns, or make a short hike in the area for close-up views. If you have time, stop by Goulding’s Museum and Trading Post, which chronicles the history of Monument Valley and its role in the film industry.
In the evening, enjoy a spectacular sunset in the valley, then head to the View Restaurant or try the Stagecoach Dining Room at Goulding’s Lodge. Enjoy the tranquility of Monument Valley under a star-lit sky one last time before a restorative sleep, as tomorrow, more desert adventures await you!
Day 7 : Page (trip to Antelope Canyon)
Continue the road to Page! Make a quick stop for a fast breakfast at LP Espresso, as you have many beauties to discover today. I recommend a morning visit to Antelope Canyon, one of the most iconic attractions in the area. Book your guided tour in advance, as the canyon can only be explored under Navajo guide supervision. You can choose between Upper Antelope Canyon, known for its spectacular light beams, and Lower Antelope Canyon, which offers a slightly more adventurous experience with stairs and narrow passages.
In the afternoon, head to Horseshoe Bend, an impressive meander of the Colorado just a few minutes from Page. The short hike of about 1.5 km round trip will lead you to a spectacular viewpoint. Be sure to bring water and a hat, as the sun can be intense.
To complete your day, explore the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, where you can admire the beauty of turquoise waters surrounded by red rock formations. If you have time, a short cruise or kayak rental on Lake Powell offers a relaxing and unique way to enjoy the surroundings. If you wish to treat yourself, note that an aerial tour of the lake is possible, a must-do in my opinion, if your budget allows it.
For dinner, choose Bonkers Restaurant, a beloved establishment for its American and Italian options in a friendly atmosphere. If you prefer a more upscale experience, Blue Buddha Sushi Lounge offers creative sushi and other fusion dishes, perfect for ending the day.
Day 8 : Flagstaff (trip to Meteor Crater)
From Page, start your day early to explore Flagstaff and Meteor Crater by taking sections of the legendary Route 66. Upon arrival in Flagstaff, head to the Historic Downtown and Railroad District. Stroll through the streets lined with historic buildings, explore local shops, and discover the authentic vibe of Route 66. For brunch, settle at the Tourist Home All Day Café, where modern and tasty dishes await you, perfect for recharging before the rest of your adventure.
After enjoying Flagstaff, head towards Meteor Crater, located about 40 minutes east. On the way, if time permits, stop at the Twin Arrows Trading Post, an iconic Route 66 spot, ideal for a souvenir photo. Once at Meteor Crater, explore this impressive site, one of the best-preserved impact craters in the world. The visitor center offers interactive exhibits and fascinating information on meteorites and astronomy. Walk to a viewpoint for a panoramic view of this massive geological feature, a testament to Earth's ancient history.
After visiting the crater, head back to Flagstaff for lunch or a late meal at Macy’s European Coffeehouse, a cozy place offering light meals and excellent vegetarian options. If you prefer a more rustic vibe, try the Beaver Street Brewery, where you can enjoy local craft beers and hearty dishes.
In the afternoon, delve deeper into the history of Route 66 by visiting the Museum Club, a historic old roadhouse filled with memorabilia and period items. If you still have time, take a stroll at Buffalo Park, a natural area offering sublime views of the San Francisco Peaks and a relaxing atmosphere.
For dinner, stay in Flagstaff and enjoy the local culinary scene at Diablo Burger, famous for its burgers made with local ingredients. If you prefer a more upscale experience, the 1899 Bar & Grill offers refined dishes in an elegant setting.
Day 9 : Phoenix
Here comes the last day of your Arizona road trip! Head back to Phoenix. If time permits, make one last hike or explore the shops in Sedona. Then, enjoy a final meal in Phoenix before catching your return flight, filled with memories of the warmth of the Southern United States!
There you go! You're ready to explore one of the most beautiful states in the West.
